Pro: We got a great value for our money at this charming hotel. The room was clean, spacious, and had traditional features that added to the castle hotel experience. The location was peaceful and we enjoyed lovely walks along the river. The staff were friendly and accommodating, especially Shannon who went out of her way to assist us with anything we needed.
The breakfast could have been improved with a wider variety of fruit options, such as chopped up fresh fruit instead of just an orange and apple in a basket.

The staff were very kind and helpful and we were all very comfortable (more than 70 guests at my sister-in-law's 70th birthday party. The marquee was very well equiped, the band was excellent and all the catering staff were very professional, attentive and the food was excellent. A small party stayed in the hotel.
The hotel is obviously a 'work in progress' and some of the rooms, although very comfortable, were in need of a lick of paint. The facilities match the best country house hotels, and we like the 'this is how it was' ambiance. It was obvious from the leaflet about the history of the house, that it had been well looked after for hundreds of years and, as we were already aware that a priory (probably a 'lodging house' on a pilgrim route), had been the first building on the site, we felt very much at home as we had travelled from Cupar in Fife, where there is evidence of a similar 'station', and which now is Cupar Old Parish Church.

I recently stayed at a charming country house hotel in Dumfries and had a delightful experience. The hotel is nestled in beautiful grounds with a serene river flowing through it, creating a truly peaceful atmosphere. The staff were incredibly welcoming and accommodating, making us feel right at home. They even went out of their way to provide special amenities for our dogs, including bowls, blankets, and treats in our room. The food at the hotel was outstanding, both for dinner and breakfast. We particularly enjoyed the well-cooked and flavorful dishes served during our evening meal. The hotel also had facilities such as a full-size snooker table, which provided entertainment during our stay. The location of the hotel was also worth mentioning, as it was conveniently situated within easy reach of Dumfries. I had a wonderful time at this hotel and would highly recommend it.

Nice setting and very quiet area for relaxing. Food was good and nicely presented and lounge nice and relaxing after dinner with a lovely open log fire. Bedroom was comfortable and excellent choice for breakfast, good value for the price we paid
Thought the bathroom could have done with some upgrading as shower was a mixer from the bath and was difficult to regulate

The building was grand and the surroundings were exceptional, with beautiful views overlooking the salmon river. I particularly enjoyed taking walks along the riverbank. The rooms had a cozy and warm atmosphere, making me feel right at home. The highlight of my stay was the delicious food at the restaurant. As a retired chef of forty years, I was impressed by the perfectly cooked steak, which had an incredible taste and consistency. The staff were polite and went above and beyond to make my stay special. I had a delightful weekend break and would highly recommend this hotel.
